The Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association
The Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association was formed in 1959 to work closely with communities across Malaysia that had been affected by leprosy. The mandate of the Association was to assist patients, ex-patients and their families, whilst also educating members of the public to create more empathy and understanding for the disease and its sufferers.
The Association was founded by the late Tan Sri Mohammed Tahir Tan Tong Hye (TH Tan), a former journalist and senator who was also the Secretary of the Malayan Chinese Association as well as the first honorary Secretary-General of the Alliance Party in colonial Malaya. Our Founder was an exceptional gentleman of many talents, who played a pivotal role in securing the independence of Malaysia from colonial rule as part of the first Malayan independence delegation to London in May 1964.
During a visit to the Sungai Buloh leprosarium, the late Tan Sri Tahir was so moved by the plight of leprosy sufferers that he mooted the formation of MaLRA.
