Mr. Joseph Kiu Chiong Kiek, fondly known as Joseph Kiu within MaLRA, was born in Bintangor, Sarawak.

Mr. Kiu furthered his studies in Australia and secured a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) degree from the University of Technology Sydney. He became a Certified Public Acccountant (Australia) and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA). He was also an associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (London).

Having returned to Malaysia, Mr. Kiu worked for the Inland Revenue Board in Sarawak, rising to the position of Deputy Director before leaving in 1997 to join Deloitte Kassim Chan Tax Services in Sarawak, where he rose to the position of Executive Director.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Kiu founded and led JK Corporation Services Sdn. Bhd, a specialist accounting and tax advisory firm, as its Managing Director.

During his career, he specialised in corporate taxation, corporate tax planning, consulting and double tax treaties. Throughout his career, Mr. Kiu continuously gave back to his profession by speaking at various tax seminars and forums where he shared his expertise with his colleagues.

Even prior to his retirement from professional life, Mr. Kiu was very active in charitable work, devoting many years of his life to helping the downtrodden and underprivileged. He served as Treasurer for both the Sarawak Society for the Blind and the Sarawak Cheshire Home for the Handicapped. He also served as Honorary Secretary (Staff Officer II) of St John Ambulance Sarawak.

His involvement with MaLRA began in 1992 when he was elected to the position of Chairman of the Sarawak Branch, prior to his election as President of MaLRA in 2016 (he served as President until 2019) after which he served in the capacity of both roles concurrently. Mr. Kiu stepped down from both roles in 2019/2020 due to his poor health, having served MaLRA for many decades.

In recognition of his longstanding services and contributions to the community via the various charitable organisations he served, Mr. Kiu was conferred the Officer of the Order of the Star of Sarawak award (Pegawai Bintang Sarawak, or PBS) on the occasion of the Governor of Sarawak TYT Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s 83rd birthday in October 2019.
