Treatment

The cornerstone of leprosy treatment is multidrug therapy (MDT), which has revolutionized the management of this disease. MDT involves a combination of antibiotics, primarily:

  • Dapsone

  • Rifampicin

  • Clofazimine

This combination is crucial to prevent the development of drug resistance.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends specific MDT regimens based on the classification of leprosy (paucibacillary or multibacillary). Treatment duration varies, typically ranging from 6 months to 12 months.

MDT effectively kills the leprosy bacteria, leading to a cure. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with MDT are essential to prevent the nerve damage and disabilities associated with leprosy.

The WHO plays a significant role in providing MDT free of charge to affected individuals and supporting leprosy control programs globally.

In addition to MDT, managing complications such as nerve damage and reactions may involve corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, pain management and rehabilitation to address disabilities.

“The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted”
